Chief Security Officer of the University of Uyo, CSP Asuquo Inyang, (Rtd), has revealed the reason behind the high level of security being exercised by personnel of the institution’s security unit. He said the emerging security challenges that had become an albatross to so many societies, particularly the developing ones, had necessitated robust and proactive security arrangements which he said were being carried out in the University of Uyo.CSP Inyang, who was interacting with this reporter in his office at the institution’s town campus recently, said since he assumed office as the Chief Security Officer, he had evolved adequate security measures to ensure effective teaching, learning and research on the campuses. The CSO asserted that one of the proactive strategies that his office had put in place, in addition to others that might not be detailed out, was the daily checking carried out at the pedestrian walk of the first gate of the town campus to ensure that those who had no business being in the school were prevented from gaining access into the institution. The Chief Security Officer disclosed that the daily checking exercise included students indecently dressed, piercing of nose, wearing of leg chain, tinting of hair, among other non-required fashions. He said this and other security measures his office had put in place contributed largely to the prevailing peace in the university, as well as absence of activities of cultists which he noted were before now, disturbing. In his words, “ If there is a problem in UNIUYO, it will affect the whole of Uyo and government of the state. So, we try our best to make sure that this institution is calm and peaceful, and that the purpose of establishing it is achieved. “ We are also being proactive, by checking everyone who comes into this school. On a normal day when all the students are around, you see how decent they are. This is because, make sure that no student with bushy hair, nose piercing, leg chain, shorts, tinted hair is allowed into the campus. “ I believe that if a student is properly dressed, he or she will not find himself or herself into all this thing called cultism”, he opined. CSP Inyang hinted that his achievements so far could not have been possible, but for his experiences in internal security, having undergone many training programmes and headed high ranking Police formations in Nigeria, in the past.He also acknowledged the support and contribution from Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ndaeyo, the management, as well as the entire security unit of the institution, saying nothing could have been achieved without them.Recall that on Monday, 26 February, 2024, the University of Uyo released a statement, notifying the students and the public of the opening of the pedestrian walk (in and out ) of the first gate of the town campus.According to the statement which was released by the Director of Security of the institution, “ all persons accessing the town campus through the pedestrian walk in of the first must show means of identification with the hard copy of any of the following: university identity card, students information form, library card and fee clearance card”.
