Political parties in Nigeria have been variously described by some commentators as a congregation of individuals with selfish interest. Others have also likened political parties to a woman who only gets into the institution of married only for what she knows are her benefits. There are other descriptions that are said to capture very clearly, the kind of parties that exist in the country.Sadly, these descriptions are as a result of lack of internal democracy in virtually all the political parties, imposition of candidates during primary elections and forth and back defection. Political parties in Nigeria have also said to have suffered from lack ideology that can help them gravitate around development.Of common knowledge in Nigeria is the defection of individuals from one party to another, basically for the purpose of “aligning” with the party in authority. One most recent case in point is the defection of Senator Bassey Albert of Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate in 2023 general elections in Akwa Ibom State. OBA was reported to have defected with his supporters to the APC in order to, as always, “align”. Many factors have been identified to be responsible for all-round defections of politicians from one party to another. One factor that appears undeniably true is lack of ideology by political parties and also a sense of selflessness by politicians. Parties and politicians lack ideology. That is why there is no gain saying the fact that almost all the political parties in Nigeria are like merely a congregation of people who expect to benefit from the membership of the congregation. Some who have a scant or shadow of ideology hardly follow it like an epistle. It is therefore, on this note that the we call on formers of political parties in Nigeria to craft an implementable ideology for their parties; an ideology that all party men and women must uphold and run with, as a vision. This cross- carpeting that happens everyday must not continue if Nigeria is to have ideologically rooted political parties.Politicians should define what governance is to them and belong to the party that sees governance from that prism. “Aligning” as often the language during defection should be jettisoned, because this easily betrays politicians as individuals without values. The National Assembly should come up with a legislation to compel all the parties to develop their ideology and make it public. And parties should be made to campaign based on their ideology so that their members will know what they represent as a group. National Orientation Commission must begin aggressive campaigns to sensitize political parties and members, of the need to develop ideology and stand by it, no matter what happens. That sense of value must be ignited to save our political parties from springing up spontaneously and folding up abruptly, like the case of YPP in Akwa Ibom State.
