It is now a religious ritual in Akwa Ibom State to observe an Interdenominational and Thanksgiving Service every second day of a new year. As a veritable platform that brings together, all citizens and residents alike in prayers and worship, regardless of faith, class and economic standing, it also offers the state government an opportunity to seek God’s presence and as well rededicate the state to Him.Although this religious exercise has been in observance in the state for some years now, it came into prominence during the last administration of Mr. Udom Emmanuel. Added to the prominence was the building of an International Worship Centre also known as an Ecumenical Centre where the state and its people can converge on. With this worship centre, other places the state hitherto used for worship and new year thanksgiving, like Ibom Hall Ground for instance, cease to hold such a magnitude of event. It is worth of note that Akwa Ibom Interdenominational and Thanksgiving Service was also envisaged to provide a common ground to consolidate on the prevailing unity and peace in the state that the past administration laboured to institutionalise. From that very time up until the latest one which held on Tuesday, 2nd January, 2024, this event has not fallen short of its creation and essence. However, it is instructive to remind the state government and the people that the unity of Akwa Ibom should go beyond what has become an annual festivity of a sort. This is because the last elections in the state where zoning was scantily observed, the controversial amendment to the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council Law, skewed political appointments in the APC family within the state and other unity-threating events that have reared their heads in the life of this relatively young administration have placed more than a burden on the state to go beyond speech-making on unity and peace of the state. For this to happen, therefore, the state government should be intentional in uniting all the ethnic groups within the territory of Akwa Ibom State. Doing this requires justice, fairness and equity to all. This unity must manifest in the equitable distribution of infrastructure and other amenities, as well as in appointments into government positions and responsibilities. After all, no society can speak of unity if there exist injustice and inequality in the distribution of shared resources and other endowments.Akwa Ibom State Government must also recognize that the continued unity of the state is partly anchored on deliberate policies that can create a healthier and safer environment for the people. These policies must include working towards making food readily available to the citizenry, creating employment to the teeming youths who need opportunities to discover themselves and creating a good business environment where every entrepreneur can explore. The government can also sustain the unity in this state by bringing onboard individuals who have capacity and the intellectual prowess to contribute to the development of the state. This should be done across party lines, religion and ethnicity. If the state government will focus on these and many more, the unity of the state will remain sacrosanct. The pending issues that seem to have suggested a divided state will never fester beyond grasp. Let the unity of the state live beyond oral and written statements on every second of a new year.
