Traders in Uyo dare UCCDA, return to street trading days after demolition exercise By Benjamin Jimmy

Barely two days after their shops and shanties said to have been erected on the right of way were demolished by Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA), traders in the affected areas within the capital city have returned to their spots, with business activities going on as usual. Recall that UCCDA, two weeks ago, had embarked on a demolition exercise in some areas, including Ewet Housing Estate entrance by Mayflower Primary School, Uyo, Oron Road by Four Lanes traffic light and its environs, Uyo Stadium Road Mini -Estate and Aka Road by Udo Udoma Roundabout, where shops, shanties and Point of Sale (POS) boots were pulled down. The demolition exercise, it was gathered, came following series of warnings and entreaties to traders along these areas to vacate such locations, as their shops and shanties were situated on the right of way which, according to the agency, would pose an obstacle to the dreams of building a smart city for Akwa Ibom State. However, two day after the first round of the demolition exercise was concluded, traders who whose shops and shanties were pulled down had returned to their spots, with no sign that something ever had happened to their businesses. When this reporter visited the affected areas two days after the demolition exercise and on Tuesday again, to ascertain the level of compliance, it was observed that traders had changed to using big umbrellas as a substitute to their shanties which were destroyed by UCCDA, a development that might not clear the right of way for UCCDA’s master plan to come to fruition.Speaking in an interview with this reporter, a fruits seller along Ewet Housing Estate entrance by Mayflower Primary School, Uyo, Mrs. Ekaette Udoh, said they resorted to the use of big umbrellas as a shade for their wares, having had their shops demolished by UCCDA.She argued that it would be almost impossible to stop the traders from selling in the area or using some shade to cover themselves and their wares, insisting that, that was the only way and place they could sell without being imposed with tickets and all manner of levies to pay for. In her words, “ UCCDA came here and destroyed our shops and also chased us away. Now, we are using big umbrellas because of the sun and the rains. We cannot just stay in the sun and be selling. “ I know that they don’t want us to stay here and sell, but we cannot go anywhere. They have to allow us to continue with our petty trading that we are using to take care of our families”.Mr. Udoh however appealed to the state governor, Pastor Umo Eno and the Executive Chairman of UCCDA, Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka, to provide a place where they would stay and carry out their businesses without being laboured with tickets and levies. However, UCCDA could not be reached as at press time to response to the development. But, this reporter gathered that the demolition exercise would continue up until the capital city is ride of shanties and other structures that on the right of way.
