Some traders selling on the streets and roads around Ibom Plaza and Itam Market Junction have said that the planned actions by Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) to end street trading and all illegal park operations within the city through enforcement might still not end business activities in those areas. The traders who bared their minds on Wednesday while speaking against the backdrop of the ongoing sensitization by the agency geared towards ending street trading and all illegal park operations within the capital city, said it was inconceivable for UCCDA to think that petty traders who are selling on the streets to survive would suddenly vacate those trading spots on the strength of only sensitization.Mr. Linus Amos, a trader at Ibom Plaza recounted attempts that were made by the immediate past administration of Udom Emmanuel to end street trading and other activities in areas unapproved by the government, but regretted that such attempts failed due to what he termed wrong application approach. He warned that if similar approach would be adopted by the administration of Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka, the UCCDA Executive Chairman to weed off street trading and illegal loading spots within the city, succeeding in building a smart capital city where traders would not be found trading on the streets would remain an illusion. The trader however admitted that sanitizing traders on the dangers of trading on the streets and roads was a welcome development, but expressed pessimism that sensitization and even enforcement as well would not take them aware from those spots.Mr. Amos therefore advised that for the current move by the agency to yield results, UCCDA must first provide comfortable trading spots with adequate security before proceeding with its relocation plan.“ It won’t be easy for us to just leave where we are now. If they want us to vacate the roads and streets, they have to provide a place where we can continue with our businesses.“ I heard the Chairman came the other day and was saying we should relocate. Relocate to where? UCCDA will not end street trading in the city. We know this already”. He said unless this was done, ending street trading, especially around Ibom Plaza, Itam Market Junction, Ikot Oku Ikono Junction and other strategic places would be a herculean task for the agency. Also speaking, another trader selling on the road around Itam Market area who simply gave his name as Ubong, said it might be impossible to end roadside trading within the market, alleging that all the spaces by the road were allocated to traders by Itu Local Government Authorities who collect ticket fees daily.A park operator at Itam Junction by the flyover who spoke on condition of anonymity, opined that ending loading and off loading in places unapproved by the government must take into consideration a lot of issues. He said one of such issues was compromising the beautification of the capital city by some government agencies whom he alleged secretly collect money from them to allow them continue in their businesses, a development he said UCCDA must first address before enforcing relocation. “ Let me tell you: there are government agencies that compromise the plan to have a beautiful city. These agencies collect money from us, and that means they also encourage illegal loading. If UCCDA says we should go to Itam Park and do our business, and one or two agencies of government collect money from us to continue, who do we obey?”The operator therefore, advised UCCDA to address all pending issues related to extortion.
